Volker is best known for winning an Oscar® for the ground-breaking visual effects for the blockbuster “Independence Day”. In 2015-2016 he was Co-Producer and Visual Effects Supervisor on the sequel, “Independence Day - Resurgence”.
In 1989 Volker graduated in Graphic Design/Animation from the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Germany. He then studied for 2 semesters at the prestigious Filmakademie Baden Württemberg, where he eventually became a teacher of animation.
He started his film career in Germany in 1988 as Visual Effects Supervisor for Roland Emmerich's “Moon 44”. Volker moved to Los Angeles in 1995 after Emmerich hired him again to supervise the visual effects for “Independence Day” and “Godzilla”.
In 1999, Volker co-founded the production company Uncharted Territory in Los Angeles with Marc Weigert to develop and produce feature films and high-quality television projects. The first of these projects was the adventure movie “Coronado”. Volker and Marc also co-produced the four-hour miniseries “Dark Kingdom - The Dragon King” and the six-hour Sci-Fi Channel miniseries “The Triangle” with Bryan Singer and Dean Devlin.
Volker was Co-Producer and VFX Supervisor (with Marc Weigert) for “White House Down” and the disaster epic “2012”, and he was Executive Producer and VFX Supervisor for the period drama “Anonymous”, all directed by Roland Emmerich.
In 1998 Volker received the highest honor for a citizen of his home country, the “Order of Merit” from Germany’s President. He has also been awarded the title of Professor by his home state and teaches Film and Media Production whenever his schedule allows.
Volker is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS), the British Academy for Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), the Producer's Guild of America (PGA) and the Visual Effects Society (VES).
